Modern Shrubs:English

Abraham Darby

Hybridized by David Austin, these roses have quickly become famous for their Old Rose charm with modern colors. Most of them bloom repeatedly and are very fragrant. For winter survival in colder regions, hilling up dirt or compost over the crown plus a chicken wire cage filled with loosely packed leaves is effective. Alternately, plant the crown of the rose from 2 to 6 inches below ground surface, and mulch lightly with straw or leaves. Loose covering material, rather than a plastic cover or Styrofoam cones, allows the plant to "breathe" during occasional warm days in winter or early spring. Abundant snow cover will provide good protection against most winter temperatures. Prune from late fall to early spring. Hardy to zone 5 except as noted.

The Alexandra Rose
Very different than most Austin roses, this shows its Alba parentage. It is a handsome shrub with good blue-green foliage and covered with single, coppery-pink blossoms with yellow stamens. It would be in place in a mixed border or a shrub border; it is very hardy and healthy and a good repeater. 5'  gr

Wise Portia
This rose is termed purple-mauve, but I remember crayons called 'red-violet' that were close to this luscious color. A beautiful, full, open cupped-shape rose, Wise Portia is a free bloomer and has a rich fragrance but needs an open, sunny position for best flowering. 3' (1982)  gr
